Contact HP straight away! if they sold you a PC with DVD capabilites then it should play DVD's without you having to buy further software.

yeah that's a nuisance. You may be able to download this from HP, cos it should have come installed. With my Dell I got a CD with the DVD software with the laptop.
the whole DVD thing seems to be a bit of a slippery mess just now. Wish they'd make up their minds...

the dvd drive and pc should come with a setup disk (cd/dvd or in a partition of your hard drive) with a software that plays dvds. else go to http://www.download.com and get VLC media Player. it's free.

You should already have the capability to play dvd's. Go to control panel and "re-install" the dvd driver.
If you're talking about a dvd recorder, go to comp. usa and get advise what's best, internal or external

you need an MPEG2 decoder, costs vary from £20 and up available for download or extra for the CD. try www.microsoft.com for authorised versions
