I have a slim dvd/cd writer drive on my laptop. I want to know if i've burned some cd projects yesterday(which didn't work) and today i'm trying to watch some dvd's (which i can't , the lights by the drive door just kept blinking) , am i supposed to goto somewhere in windows to "switch" back from cd to dvd mode??? or you don't need to do that , it should auto detect what it needs?

model: Matshita ujs-820
also, is there a unspoken rule like a "max" write speed that a slim writer is only capable of as compared to a normal dvd writer?

Try to completely shutdown your laptop and then power it on back.

Then try to play the DVD in the drive.
You can also try to play a CD and then check(make sure that the CD and DVD you are trying to play is Original and not a copied one).

Even it does not work, try it in Safe Mode.
Restrat laptop and Press F8 key immediately, select Safe Mode option and it will take a few minutes to boot to Safe Mode.
Then try to read a CD and DVD in safe mode, if it works, then its an issue with the operating system, try system restore to get it back to a date when it was working absolutely fine.
if system restore fails, you need to reinstall everything back on the system.

if the drive does not work in safe mode, then the drive has gone bad and needs replacement.

Was checking for drivers for your model and came acroos a few forums of people with same problem as you.

Advice given was to remove drive from laptop, boot up windows, shut down, re-install drive and re-boot windows again.

Have you tried a system re-store might be a drivers fault.
