From a moral standpoint, piracy is wrong because it means stealing something without paying the creator(s). Many people say that pirating music is not a bad thing because musicians are rich, but the truth of the matter is that very few are rich. People like Britney Spears are very rare. Musicians don't make much from CDs, but that money can mean the difference between being a musician full time and working at a job full time and playing music only on weekends. Others say that musicians should be making music out of love, not money. But musicians have to pay bills just like everyone else does, and many times they are unable to create music if they have to work multiple jobs just to pay the bills. Another issue is that record companies look at how well CDs and legal downloads sell in order to decide which artists to finance. If lots of music is pirated instead of purchased, the music label may decide to drop the artist because they aren't making a profit. It also makes them hesitant to invest in new musicians if they feel like people will just steal the music.

Many of the same issues apply to software and movies. While people focus on stars who make millions of dollars per movie and use that to justify stealing movies, the money from DVD sales goes to writers, producers and others who get paid much less than the stars. As for software, software is very expensive to produce. Many developers, graphic artists and technical writers as well as designers and others work for years to produce software. Piracy means they don't get paid, and in some cases the company lays off many people or even goes out of business.
