FTP is simply a way of uploading / downloading files from one PC to another.

What you will need is the IP address of the PC you wish to connect too. It usually has a password too so get that.

The simplest way to connect is to open an internet browser window and simply insert the FTP address into it.

This is like http://***** but instead starts with ftp://***

Once you connect, you can drag/drop files into the correct folders.

I do recommend getting an FTP client though as this is much easier. It will store your FTP connections and passwords if you wish and will allow you to continue any up/downloads that stop early.

That should be all you need.

FTP is mainly used for uploading to servers, not downloading from servers. It can work in both directions though, its just more commonly used for uploading.

In step by step instructions, as requested:

1) Find the FTP username, password and URL for your server from your service provider. If you don't have these, you're basically a gonner from this point onwards.

There are two paths you can go down from here, Path A or Path B (for arguements sake)

A2) Go to Google (or Download.com) and search for "FTP Software".
A3) Download any FTP package that you think will work. I don't use them (I go down path B) so I can't suggest any.
A4) Use the Help files to find out how to enter your FTP details. Make sure the connection works.
A5) Again, using the Help files if you need to, syncronise your FTP server with your website folder.

Path B is a lot easier, and requires no additional software downloads.

B2) Open a Windows Explorer window and enter your FTP domain with "ftp://" at the start.
B3) Enter your user name and password when prompted. Tell Windows Explorer to remember the name if you plan on using the same machine to sort out your website.
B4) Copy and paste your website files to the folder you are supposed to. I'm not sure if all servers work the same, you'll have to speak to your service provider.

If you use Dreamweaver (at least), it has a built in FTP setting when creating a new site. You need to go through the help files for this, as I can't remember how to set this up. Sorry.

Good luck.

The easiest way is to use the FireFox with the FireFTP plug in. It is quick, easy, and reliable.
