Sounds like he's pulling one over on you. You could expect to pay up to $450.00 for a water heater at Lowe's (You could pay more, but I'm speaking average.) Lowe's charges something like $150.00 to install it. You do the math.

Get a new plumber. Heck, get Lowe's to install it.

I just finished looking at Lowe's web site, and I saw all kinds of water heaters, including direct vent (which they most definitely DO sell) and high-altitude water heaters. I don't know where you're located, so I don't know if there's a specific code or requirement for your location, or if you live at an elevation that would require a high-altitude model. The only ones that I saw above about $500 were really large capacity, or "tankless" models, or else they were commercial models. If you are simply replacing your existing home water heater, I can't imagine why it would cost $500 in labor to do this; when I was a kid, my dad installed a replacement water heater, and simply had a licensed plumber out to inspect the finished work. I would strongly suggest that you get a couple more estimates from other plumbers before you spend that kind of money. You might also check with Lowe's and see what they carry instead of taking his word as to their inventory. I can't say for sure, but somehow, I smell a rat.

he is correct you obviously live in a mobile home and the water heater is accessed from the inside which by code requires a DV or a direct vent water heater or sealed combustion unit. Lowes menards and home depot carry an OT type which is for an outside access alcove. the DV are more costly. 1000 is about the average for replacing unless you are in central Minnesota I do them for 850. According to federal code even a plumber must carry a mobile home installers license to perform work on a manufactured or mobile home. This is often overlooked even by the state.

Yes he's playing you for a fool. All new tanks are required to have a closed combustion chamber and that has lead to a significant increase in cost. However a new standard 40 gal. tank with closed combustion chamber is eaxactly what the sell at home depots and lowes and they run about $300.00. No retailers can sell sub-standard tanks anymore.
Better just to call another plumber for a quote.

in case you do no longer something, $500 to $800, could conceal it. till its in a good place, and the plumbing has to get replaced. then you are speaking substantial money. I did the hard artwork final month on one and gained $85.00 ensue plus an hrs pay of $60.00 i individually robbed the man. He had the hot water heater and all the required new fittings, with in 3 feet of the previous one, it grow to be a walk out basement, I drove my truck with in 10 feet of the back door. there grow to be a drain with in 18 inches of the previous water heater. He had a buddy that wanted the previous water heater. All I did grow to be disconnect, and reconnect. the city reported it had to be carried out by a license plumber.

price sounds high. it shouldnt take more than 2 hours to put it in. i mean even if we say it is 500 for the water heater, and then another 100 for pipe, fittings, and whatever other little do dads he may need that leaves 350 for labor, that is about 115 per hour for three hours. i think you are getting the shaft.
