At this very moment, citizens living in NE U.S. (e.g., NY) are concerned about the up to ten feet of snow melting and causing major floods due to rivers rising. [Source ABC World News 2/24/2007] The concern is that the cold weather up to now will suddenly turn warm and cause that snow to melt suddenly rather than gradually. And on top of that, it is not uncommon for the snow storms to turn to rain storms when the weather turns warm. That will make the flooding potential even worse.

Usually the temperature is slow to rise and therefore the snow melts slowly. This doesnot cuase enough water buildup to create a flood since the water has time to runoff or absorb into the ground. This is usual conditions however, with the amount of snow denver has received it may be hard to tell, depends on how fast the snow will melt.
