nowadays children love new year because of the red packets "ang bao" but they never thought about the signifiance of it. so what is the point of giving?

The red packets are called "Lai Shi" which means something "auspicious" something good. Colour red is the celebration colour in the Chinese community, it's suppose to bring good luck, properity, wealth, health and everything your heart's desire. Giving someone a Lai-shi mean wishing that person good luck, good health and wishes comes true. The name "ang-bao" is basically "red packet" is called because it's red and it's a little packet, and not the actual name, which is supposed to be called the lai-shi.

I was told they are packets to bring wealth and luck for the upcoming year.
