I keep saying that, but she keeps coming back and asking if I'm well... How can I make her more comfortable to 'open up'?

Understand: I rarely talk to her, and when I do, it is online, but she was a childhood friend...

By being there for your friend. Spend time with them..quality time. If there are chores help out, or go watch a movie together. If your friend wants to talk about the mom's death..allow her and listen, listen, listen. Offer a shoulder. If you can pray...when alone pray for the family.

honestly, it really depends on your friend. your friend might want to have a shoulder to lean on and cry out to someone. But you friend might also not want any sympathy to show that she/he is strong and that ur friendship is not bonded by sheer sympathy. commit to ur friend like u always had and make sure that shes emotionally stable.
