Choice that suited India's socio economic conditions of the Time. Non-allignment as the Basic policy and friendship with China and Soviet Union and all the emerging Nations of the time, without being enemical to the US and the NATO group was the corner stone of Nehru's foreign Policy.Friendship with the former colonial power , UK was another important step in that policy because of which we remained in the Commonwealth and was able to steer its course to benefit most of the new Nations which emerged from colonial rule.
The fact thatChina betrayed our friendship for the sake of land is another story. To understand why it happened, we will need to re-open the pages of British India's History and the Maps of the time. Those days are behind us now and we are building up an essntially progressive relation with China. The US had professed enemity to China and wanted India to toe that line, but President Nixon saw nothiong wrong in suddenly reversing that stand and making amends for it because the econmic opportunities in a new China emerging strong were too tempting for US to ignore.India's attitude towards China's rightful place in the comity of Nations has always been consistent, because that was the morally right stand and not a policy dictated by so-called enlightened self-interests.This is like conceding to your elder brother his rightful place in the family even though you have a quarrel with him.The logic by which we supported China's case for permanent seat in the Security Council holds equally good for us and the US is blocking our entry to chide us for not siding with them in the first place.
In the long run it is Nehru's vision of the United Nations that will survive and prevail in this world.Dreams of Unipolar Government of the world are bound to fail because of the lack of morality in it.It may take another twenty or thirty years, but then it will last for centuries from then.

The foreign policy under Nehru was a mendicant one because India was not yet economically established and politically stable.
