Peninsular and Oriental
-- even now, the company's full name is still "The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company".

And yes, the spelling is "peninsular".
So why the thumbs-down?

everyone who said Peninsular and Oriental is correct.....P&O go back a long long way.......so far that the Peninsular refered to is the Iberian Penisnular ( ie Spain and Portugal!) from the 1840s when P&O ran sailing ships to Spain....as the British Empire extended eastward, so did P&O untill they became the dominant passenger and freight line serving India and the East via first Cape Town and South Africa and then via the Suez Canal when it was opened...

Cunard and White Star were the emblems of Britsh passenger ship supremecy on the USA run; P&O held the same unchallenged first place on the run to India and was very much the symbol of the Empire east of Suez

and as a reply to the guy below...POSH, meaning better class or better surroundings, originally came from steamers passing thru the Red Sea/Suez Canal to India....port side outbound would be on the east and out of the afternoon sun; likewise starboard would be on the east side coming home ( to England). Thus the best cabins would be Port Out Starboard Home.......except this booking / ticket was on ALL the steamship lines that ran to India, not just...or even starting with.... P&O

The letters P & O in P&O Ferries = Peninsula and Orient. The P&O Line goes back a long way to when it was a major passenger liner company.

Peninsula and Orient as noted above, picking up from the East India Company after The British Government seized it's assets.
It refers to the Indian Peninsula and Oriental regions it served.

The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company is the full name of the parent company. Therefore, those who said "Peninsular and Oriental" are most certainly correct.

Not sure who the "thumbs down clown" is, but they are clueless.
