wifi stands for wireless fidelity. in common language, wireless internet connection. some are known with the name hot spot, or sometimes people just refer to it as wireless internet, wireless connection... in my college (here in malaysia) we just refer to it as "wireless" (as opposed to the "cable" or sometimes just "LAN" for the other type of internet we use here). i think you can figure out why it is called as just "wireless" while it may made no sense to people from english-speaking countries.

if it's a free-access wifi area, you just hook your device up (turn on the wireless adapter of your notebook, smart phone) anywhere in the access point's range and you can access internet instantly.

if it's a paid-access you will need id and password to access the internet. some providers use prepaid, some use post-paid method. either way you will need to login to use the service.

i include some reference here.
