Two authors you might like are Douglas Kennedy and Nicholas Sparks - whatever I read of theirs I have to finish in one sitting. Also, though you say you don't like crime and murders, for sheer suspense and unputdownability you have to read Harlen Coben's books - the ones featuring the detective Bolitar aren't as good as the one off's like Darkest Fear, etc.
Whoever recommended American Psycho? Maybe I missed something - 'stream of consciousness?' - no it's absolutely disgusting and made me throw up!

Different Season's by Stephen King is a good read, or The Count of Monte Cristo By Alexandre Dumas is a good book but a mission to get through, Stephen Fry has modernised the story in The Stars Tennis Balls, which is also a very clever book.
I'm currently reading A Prayer for Owen Meany, which I'd recommend, but its certainly an acquired taste!

Most of the recommended books you could find at your local airport or grocery store. If you want something that is a great read but also challenging and a bit uncomfortable, the suggestion of American Psycho was excellent although Bret Easton Ellis's best book, in my opinion, has to be the Rules of Attraction. They are both hard to read in that they are written in a stream-of-consciousness format which can be hard to follow. Neither is standard fare and both are far better than most of the other books listed.

Yes, a book just out in paperback this month (February) called "among the dead cities" Can't remember who wrote it but it was a showstopper. Or try H.Rider Haggards, King Solomons mines. An absolute cracker of an adventure story.Over the years I have read it 7 or 8 times.

My favourite book is 'Running With Scissors' by Augusten Burroughs,it's quite unique in content-very bizarre but a true story,it's really funny too!! The story of the authors mad upbringing by his mothers shrink who he was given away to,the family he lives with are truely nuts!!! It's a querky read. And the follow up books 'Dry' & 'Practical Magic' are just as good.

You could have given us an idea about genre here, or your age range.
But, a good book for a good cross-section of society is The Hobbit, followed by Lord of the Rings. I has fantasy, and romance, and war, and a really good story line running through it all.
