catalytic convertor usage?

Can anyone pls explain the use of catalytic converter in BMW and does in affects the mileage if it is old

The catalytic converter captures pollutants bound for your exhaust. When it becomes full or clogged, your car becomes sluggish. This translates into exaggerated fuel consumption. It can be removed if you live in an area that doesn't require an emissions test.
If not, might as well pull out your wallet/check book and get ready to spend way too much on a very small & easily built component.
