Hello Rach,

I don't blame you for being scared. All but the bravest of fools can become somewhat frightened when facing the unknown.

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breasts. It is a some what painful proceedure, though the doctor says it is necessary and has saved many women from a death resulting from breast cancer. It doesn't take long, so the pain it causes is usually bearable by the patient.... You will be asked to strip from the waist up and be given a gown to put on, with opening in front. Then you will be taken to the X-ray room where the machine that does the X-ray is. There will be a small plateform that can be raised or lowered hydrolically, and which has an outlined area where you are to place your breast, one at a time. When your breast is on the plateform within the outlined area, another hydrolic plate will be lowered over the top, compressing your breast tissue between the plateform and plate. At this time the X-ray is taken, the hydrolic plate lifted and the process is repeated for the other breast.

The ultra sound is a painless proceedure and takes only a few minutes. Again, you will be asked to take off your clothing from the waist up and be given a gown to wear. A gel will be applied to your skin over the area of suspicion and the technichian will slowly move a probe across the top of your skin, getting a look inside with the ultrasound machine. (needless to say, I PREFER this method of checking for lumps!)

As for the pain in your chest..... Do you smoke, or drink coffee? Drink a lot of soda? Eat any spicy foods? You could have some indigestion problems or possibly GERD (gastro-intestinal reflux disease).

Try not to worry, really! Worry and stress make many medical conditions and diseases worse. Just try to relax, think calming thoughts and know that most people your age are healthy. All lumps in breasts do not mean cancer (too much caffine, for one, can cause lumps in the breast), and chest pain can be caused by a multitude of things.

Best wishes,

S

ps, I'm sorry Rach, you will need to find the cause of the pain. Hopefully the doctor can find and treat the cause soon so you can stop taking the pills.

It's possible this could be just a cyst. I'm glad that the dr is doing an ultrasound as this does a better job showing the density of the breast in younger women, meaning those under 50. I had my very first mammogram when I was 26 due to pain in my left breast and mine came up normal but I found out searching on this issue that the dr should have done just an ultrasound in that case.

With the ultrasound they will run a special wand over the area of the breast (and probably check the other as well to make sure nothing abnormal is there) to see if it shows if this thing is just a cyst or something more serious. It only takes about 30 minutes to do.

With the mammogram they will have you stand up to a special machine where they will take two views of your breasts, one from the front of it and one from the side (and with this one they actually flatten it out a lot in order to get a better view of the tissue) to see if anything abnormal shows up that way that might have been missed on the ultrasound.

My suggestion is to try and relax going in to these tests. And with the mammogram what I did is when it came to the part of the side view I slid the rest of my body down so that the pressure of the machine itself wouldn't hurt me. It should be a lot easier now because they have digital machines now unlike when I had mine done almost 10 years ago.

As for the chest pain ask your dr about an inflammatory condition called costochondritis which has to do with inflammation of the cartilage around the ribcage. With the way it causes pain it can make one feel like they might be having a heart attack or lung issues. I was diagnosed with this about 10 years ago.

But pls relax hun and I hope you get some answers soon.

use your computer to google mammogram and breast lumps. don't worry about crying it's a normal reaction to this type of news. in a mammogram they compress your breasts into a machine and take an x-ray . in a ultra sound they use sound waves to look at the inside of your body this doesn't hurt but you may find the mammogram uncomfortable.
you are very young so I wouldn't worry to much about it being cancer. It's probably scar tissue or something I had scar tissue in my breast once after a car accident and the doctor just watched it and it went away also it could be a cyst. cancer is usually not pain full. so it's probably a cyst or something.

The mammogram is an x-ray that gets a close look at your breasts. An ultrasound does an even closer look. The ulntrasound is a bit more comfortable than the mammo. If it is a benign (no cancer) tumor, they remove it with a biopsy. It might be a cyst. I truly wish you the best. take care.

Dont worry about crying in front of the doctor, im sure they werent worried about it..............its good that you let out your emotion instead of holding it
