On *nix machines, the number of ping packets sent is unlimted. (unless interrupted). You can restrict this using -c option.

So, I presume you are testing this in DOS where you can set parameters N (for number of packets) and P( ping wait in seconds)

e.g: ping yahoo.com /N10 /P2

This sends 10 packets and has ping wait 2 seconds after it receives a response from the remote host before it sends the next packet.
