Now THAT is a very good question!! I remember as a little girl I used to watch my mom put it on, and I asked her the same thing. She didn't know. And here I am, a grown woman myself, and somehow it seems impossible to keep my mouth shut when I put on mascara.
I think maybe it's because when you open your mouth it stretches your facial muscles, which sort of has the effect of opening your eyes more, therefore easier to apply the mascara. That's just my theory though!

I worked this out the other day!! I was in the car putting my make up on, and when i was putting my eyeshadow on, i had my mouth open, i tried closing it, but all that did was make my lids in completely the wrong position. It is the same for mascara.

I heard this once on a movie, & ever since that day, I have never opened my mouth when I put mascar on.
I watch everyone out on mascara & they all have their mouth open.
I ask everyone why they do it & they say it's to stretch their face so their eyelashes are easier to apply mascara too.
When I put mascara on, I look cranky as their is no expression on my face because I'm trying to hard to not open my mouth
It's funny. Try it

I'm not sure but I think it is the same nerve center that makes you open your mouth and close it with your lips tucked in when you are feeding a baby, bounce back and forth when you are holding a baby, and stick out your tongue and bite down a little bit when you are concentrating on something.

because of the way the position of the eyelashes need to be for application of the mascara correctly.

I can.
Your question reminds me of my ex when he used to feed a baby. The occasional times my kids father fed them as babies were always with his mouth opening as they took the spoon in their mouths.
