Start looking for another job

I got sacked for doing that. My only advice is start looking for another job, or call the customer and apologise. You could lie and say you had some bad news: death of a relative, house repossessed etc. and so were stressed and not thinking. That may work if the person is a reasonable sort.

Failing that, get down the job centre!

You made a mistake
You acted unprofessional
You are likely in a spot of bother

Fortunately, its fixable if you do it right. Its best not to lie in this situation, because if you get found out, it could go a lot worse than it is.

The customer may not take it any further, in which case you are spared complete torment.

Speak to your boss and explain that you were not thinking right, you acted unproffessionally and made a mistake. You are really sorry for doing this, and intend not to ever let it happen again. You are also coming to him on this because you want him to hear of it from you than from his bosses, as that way the situation can be controlled to minimum damage level.

If they sack you for it, you might be in a position to appeal depending on how strong the evidence is. In this case, I would possibly indicate that a written warning should be the worst coming your way, but I do not think that this could be contrived as Gross Misconduct at this stage.

This issue needs to be handled with great diplomacy and tact.

i did this once too - i worked in a call centre for Orange mobile phones.... i put the customer (who'd been very nasty to me) on hold, and passed comment to my colleague about what a total w*nker this guy was.... only to find out that he'd heard everything i'd said coz the mute button on that particular computer was broken... he did write in and complain about me, and i'm ashamed to say that i lied through my teeth to protect my job ! i got away with it too, but i also learnt my lesson, and in future, as well as pressing the mute button, i also unplugged my headset from the computer if i needed to let off steam about a rude customer ! (just pray that your company do not record calls !!!)

Say that you wasn't talking about her!
You was talking about the boss!
May get you fired same way
But at least you will have slagged of the boss before you go!

I'm inclined to think you should advise your boss, it's no good trying to deny something like this. They may not complain but your boss should be in possession of the facts, should they do so. I think you should be a little more careful when taking phone calls in the future.

I'd deny it unless it was recorded. If it was, then I'd apologise. In fact, I'd be inclined to get in there with a 'watered down' version of what happened before the customer does !

Go tell your boss this has happened 1st. That way he will be able to deal with it when the customer rings to complain rather than getting crap from them them passing it on to you.

Denial is the best answer here my friend. If it does come to a head say you were talking about somebody else and didn't realise the phone was still on.
