It is very important for a teacher to have mastery in any subject he/she is going to teach since he/ she might have complete knowledge of what he/she is teaching. What ever the question of the student is, the teacher must be able to answer it at any time. If not then the student will say that his teacher doesn't know and that is very bad.

You can't give anything that you don't have to others. So unless you know what the subject is and you are the expert on that, you can't teach the 'how' and 'why' of the subject. But it is not uncommon for a teacher to get pupils who surpass the teacher's knowledge. In any case, the teacher should try the best to be an expert in the subject. Otherwise .. at the least .. imagine a teacher one against N number of students, unable to answer fundamental questions! Do your home work before asking the students to do some.

Good, effective teachers are leaders and coaches. They bring students along the path and while that can be done by pushing from behind, it works much better if the teachers are at the destination, bringing the students toward it.

Teachers are more effective when they understand the process(es) that resulted in understanding.

As for knowing a collection of facts - that is not as essential as understanding the relationship between the events/facts. This requires a degree of mastery.

This harkens back the phrase, "Those who can, do. Those who can't teach." This is a terrible statement, in my opinion. Teachers need to be more competent than their students in the subject matter, or what could they really teach them? Some of the best teachers are people who have worked in the field of what they are teaching. They have insight that others could never bring to the classroom.

Hey, if you were the student, would you even lend an ear to a teacher who can't teach or lacks confidence in his subject? They are supposed to be professionals, not family or friends. And why do you go to school? To learn professional knowledge, skills and the right attitude for success.

If they haven't master the subject of whatever they're teaching, then how do they suppose to teach the students. They need to know the subject very well in order to pass down their knowledge.
