If you are a US citizen it is your social security number.
(If you have requested and obtained an EIN, then it is that.)

Again, I am amazed at the way people who DON'T KNOW try to pass off information as if it's true. While I'm sure he was well-intentioned, the answerer Tom4bucs above is not correct. Your federal tax id number is *always* issued by the federal government. Some states may *also* issue you a state Taxpayer Identification Number but that's not your FEIN (FEDERAL Employer Identification Number).
An individual's Tax ID number is typically her social security number. If you have employees, collect sales tax, or need to report income for a business that has any form other than a sole proprietorship, you'll need a tax id number.
To get a tax ID number, you can often apply online at the link I've cited below.

If you are an individual taxpayer and a US citizen or permanent resident, your Tax ID number is your Social Security Number. If you are entitled to a SSN and don't have one, apply at your nearest Social Security office.
If you are not entitled to a SSN, you must apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number from the IRS. Submit Form W-7 to the Philadelphia Service Center with proof of your identity as stated on the form. Here's a link to the form: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf
Nobody can e-mail your number to you.

What Scott and Bostonian said. It is your Social Security Number or if you are a Business you applied for and received and EIN number, or you are a guest and have and ITIN, which you would've applied for.....
Check with a tax professional to help you with your taxes.
good luck & bless
