It is depends on your interests or what you want to do in Bali. Kuta will be a good choice for you if you like shopping and things. The beach is very crowded with int'l and domestic tourists, convinience acces to stores, markets, beach, restaurants. the hotels are vary, from affordable budget hotels to five stars ones. More affordable hotels can be found a long Poppies Lane (I&II) Its known as the best place for young age tourists and surfers because of its easy acces to the beaches and stores.
Sanur is more quiet and known as a place for a old ppl but it has markets and plenty of restaurants too (cheaper).
Ubud will be a more artistic place and unique with their rice field.Hotels are very affordable but the night life is usually end no later than 1am.
Should you have any question , email me.
Have a great time!

Provided that you are away from Kuta, any of the safe resort areas. Prices for a decent hotel are always likely to be in the $50 - $100 range, but there are ( as you may know ) many exclusive resorts which are $700 + per night.

So assuming you don't want to rough it, the directory links below should be able to identify a resort and location - my personal choice is Sanur -, but that's not everybody's choice.

It makes me recall my stays at Kuta and NusaDua, for me Kuta is more like market street, and Nusadua is resort.

You can move from here to there in less than 1 hour, so Kuta, Sanur and Nusadua, it may not matter where you stay.

with $100 or so, you can find a decent hotel, and there are more choices with upper and lower price hotels.

Go to Sanur and UBUD. Contact Floressa Tours and let them get you reasonable hotel. We have traveled with them a couple of years ago and are scheduled to go again March 14.

it depends on your interests, but the best sunsets are seen along kuta beach. the kuta area is best known for its night life, while ubud is known for its arts scene. if you want pampering, go to nasa dua. you can also check this link for more details:
