I'm single, no children and my life is empty and meaningless. I don't dislike my work or my free-time activities, but there just doesn't seem to be any reason for the things I do.
I don't like the idea of getting married or having a family to fill the void. That sounds like a very bad reason to me, but I can't get over the feeling that without someone else in my life, I'll eventually just stop caring altogether.
*sighs* Wot to do, wot to do?

An egotistical person is someone who has an inflated sense of self-importance. The premise of my question is that I have NO importance. Read the question please before you answer.

I believe there is a time for everything in life. You are right to not get married and have a family to fill a void. That would make you feel lonely with a lot of responsibility. Your time will come. Most of the time it comes when you stop looking for it.

i wrote something pretty close to it... read it through.
Let's really examine this....
I'm born and i'm taken care of, i develop and i go to school.
I go to school to get a good job. I get a good job to work
away my youth and when i can finally retire i'm too old to
really enjoy it. So really why bother? Why not cut out early
and just finish now after all the parties have ended and
there is nothing left to celebrate? Why not just end it?
Unfortunately we can't.. As a matter of fact it's illegal..
Can you imagine? Making it illegal to choose how your own
self will die. Maybe it's our inability to control our lives that
causes us to try and control our deaths.
But why would they want us not to kill ourselves? I have
a few theories... My first is the governement wants to
leech more money from you and they think they can
extract just a little bit more. My second theory is that
they truly think there is something wrong with you. Why
can't they simply accept that the people who want to end
their lives really truly will just do it.
Why does society look down at those of us who with to
just end all misery, depression, and suffering? Why can't
they reason there is actually a reason to our depression?
But no... They decide we need help and lock us up in the
hospital until we no longer wish to and almost anyone
will swear never to do it under the conditions they force
upon those unlucky enough to fail at their first attempt.

Soul-searching. Find spiritual meaning. Hug some trees n' stuff.
Get in contact with your energies n realise the truth....
All that Is is one single, huge being. Feel that, relax inside yourself and inside your life, and time will seam to slow down. Meaning it will pass easier and you'll enjoy every moment of your trip on space-shuttle earth.
Go to nature a lot...forests, mountains, places where you won't find a soul. You'll feel a lot less lonely and uncaring. Watching the night sky from a deserted mountain top is a must-do to get some perspective. You'll realize where you actually are and if you don't enjoy that fact, you're probably dead...

Sounds like you are not happy. Someone said that in giving happiness to others we somehow find it ourselves.
If you feel empty you could donate your time at the local orphanage or homeless shelter or work with an environmental charity. The world is clamouring for you.

I wish I had free-time activities ! Get out there and help somebody ! Do you know how many elderly people out there just might need someone to lift a box into the closet or something like that ? Make yourself useful and care about somebody else, and people will care for you back.

Thoughts from the great Albert Einstein:
"The individual has become more conscious than ever of his dependence upon society. But he does not experience this dependence as a positive asset, as an organic tie, as a protective force, but rather as a threat to his natural rights, or even to his economic existence. Moreover, his position in society is such that the egotistical drives of his make-up are constantly being accentuated, while his social drives, which are by nature weaker, progressively deteriorate. All human beings, whatever their position in society, are suffering from this process of deterioration. Unknowingly prisoners of their own egotism, they feel insecure, lonely, and deprived of the naive, simple, and unsophisticated enjoyment of life. Man can find meaning in life, short and perilous as it is, only through devoting himself to society. "
