A learning objective is the goal... it is what the teacher is supposed to help the students learn.

If the teacher has no goals, they have no way of determining thier effectiveness.

**************

Learning objective: The students should be able to add 2+2 and get 4.

Teacher to class: I have 2 apples on this end of my desk and 2 apples on that end of my desk. How many apples do I have?

Kid in the back : 5

Goal was not achieved....

The learning objective is the goal. When it is clearly stated the teacher can determine whether or not it fits the curriculum guidelines. If the goal is suitable - proceed.

With the LO stated, the teacher can determine how to measure the students' success through evaluation. The teacher can decide on the various evaluation tools and how they will fit into the teaching plan. (Tushie briefly touched on this.)

With evaluations complete, the teacher can then determine if the lesson(s) was/were successful, what modifications to make to the lesson(s) in future and what further teaching needs to take place (remedial or enrichment).

If there is no learning objective then the teacher is just filling in time. There's no time in today's schools for filling in time because we have a crowded curriculum.

By defining your learning objectives, you have a clearer view or direction as to how you will lay out your teaching plan for your students, as compared to just listing down topics from a book.

It also makes it easier for you to assess your students' performance in line with setting your learning objectives as their end-goal.

Once you have developed all your learning objectives, it would be easy to see what topics should be inserted first, or what skills would you like to develop on your students first

The same way knowing your destination helps you drive somewhere. . .if you don't know where you're going, you drive around in circles and never get there. Without an objective, a lesson is literally pointless.
