I would choose diesel over petrol any day. The Freelander is not a very ergonomically designed vehicle and can use copious amounts of petrol. You will get many more miles to the gallon with diesel and as the first answerer stated, it can also run on bio diesel. Diesel vehicles have advanced in leaps and bounds over the years and are certainly not the noisy, polluting vehicles that they once were...

Diesel engines almost always use less fuel than their petrol equivalents.
With the Freelander, the diesel engines are also more reliable than the K-series petrol engines. The earlier "TD" models used the Rover L-series, which was crude but effective, the later "TD4" models used a BMW engine, which was more refined, more efficient, and BMW-reliable.
The new Freelander 2 uses a Ford/Volvo petrol engine and a Ford/PSA diesel engine. Land Rover expect the majority of sales in the UK and other European markets to be diesel - the petrol version is aimed at the USA market.

in freelanders diesels are better the petrol engines in older freelanders are rover engines there weak and if used alot become tired and are prone to break down for several reasons plus they guzzle the fuel a typical diesel freelander will still do 40 to 45 mpg if driven sensibly and are good for 200 thou miles

Diesel power any day. Overall better economy, longevity, lower maintenance, and better low-end. As long as you have got fuel, air, compression, and good batteries, they will fire. I am a Diesel mechanic, and I even hate looking at a gasoline engine. If given the option, I will pick a heat engine over a spark-ignition engine any day.

OK Bender, if someone offers you a Freelander, run away. They are not your friend. Don't buy it. Think twice about it if they offer to pay you to take it away. I'm serious. A friend of mine actually sued the dealer for selling goods of unmerchantable quality after the transmission locked up at highway speed which nearly caused a serious accident. That was after spending many weeks in the workshop being "fixed".

Diesel can use less fuel if driven sympathetically, and can run on biodiesel. Emissions from a petrol are cleaner.
