What is the advantage of using the occasional long word in an article primarily comprised of short, simple words? What impression does it communicate to readers?

Just for the record, for those who think this is a homework question - no, it isn't! I'm writing a review of a magazine article, and was interested to see whether readers find the use of long words (where simple, short ones would do just as well) irritating. Or alternately, whether it lends the text authority and sophistication. I am slightly divided on this one...

If you use the long word correctly, if looks as if you are an educated person. If you use the long word incorrectly or use too many of them, it looks like you are flipping through a thesaurus and trying to find words that will impress people

You've over simplified this.

Just by throwing in some long words creates no impression at all, apart from to uneducated, impressionable people.

If you are writing a very technical piece of work (especially in the sciences for example), understandably you will have longer words than usual in it. But mostly, you need to write as necessary.

You need to be concentrating on using the words that are right for the job, to put your idea across. Not trying to impress other people with the long words you know.

Writing something intelligible and with a purpose will get the best impression from your readers and respect from your peers.

Also, if this is a homework question (as the tone suggests it might be), do your own homework!

Don't use long words just for the sake of using them. Use them only if they enhance your prose. Good short words are every bit as good as long words.

Too many people try to impress with language and end up falling down by trying far too hard.

And - Definitely don't use text speak!

Long or short words doesn't really mean a thing if the reader doesn't get the point.
