There was actually a study back in the late eighties in which overcrowded Rats (yes, rats) would form gang like juvenile groups as a means to protect themselves from older rats while fighting over resources. These rats exhibited very ganglike behavior, with violence, sneak attacks, and territorial overdrive (and even rape, believe it or not, in which they would attack females en masse probably as a means to try to pass on genetic material in an environment were there were just Too many).

nothing better to do...once they drop out of school and formal education ends,about age 8,the only recourse to make money is crime and the only way to work a gangs tyrf is to be in one....pretty simple really
