Is it too late to plant roses, and do you have any tips to do that?

I cheated when I started my lawn and it worked. I only loosened about an inch of soil. Then I spread my seed and covered it with about a half an inch of garden soil I bought by the trailer load. You should hand water it twice a day. Be careful about the watering. If you water too heavy in one spot it will push the seed around and you will get clumps and bare spots. Reseed when the nighttime temps are around 50 degrees. Grass prefers cooler weather. As for the roses, as long as your ground is not frozen, now is a great time to plant. Dig the hole twice as big as you think it should be and add a lot of compost to it. Adding peat is good too. Roses like their water. Adding compost and peat will help keep them moist but will also help with the drainage.

The best time is in the fall. Depending on the condition of your soil, you may want to put down a layer of peat/top soil mix. The peat will hold moisture. This is something you'll have to mix yourself. If your soil is good, then, rake it real well, loosening the top couple of inches. Sprinkle seed on the area. Make sure you get the right kind of seed for the location, and which kind you prefer. Then tamp it down. You can cover it with straw, not hay, because that will seed. The straw will keep the birds from eating the seed, and keep moisture in. Then water EVERY DAY. Don't drown it but water it. I have also seeded in the early spring. That works well, but then it doesn't have that long before the heat of the summer hits it.
Roses, yes it is too late. Roses are very particular plants. Read up on them before you do anything. They are very high maintenance plants, too. So, be sure you're willing to put a lot of extra effort into them.

The best time of the year for seeding is August 15 through October 15. The soil must be loosened somewhat, just sowing seed on hard ground will not work. We like to 1st apply lime and fertilizer and then aerate the soil, then sow the seed using a turf fescue blend at least 8lb per 1000sq. ft. then aerate the soil at least once more. I prefer to plant roses in late February early March.

The lawn can be re-laid before the rains. Rose cuttings can be put down in mid-october.
