The amount of emphasis being placed on this particular Hollywood stereotype is laughable....utterly and completely laughable.

I`ve been trying since 2000 to launch a book about Hollywood and corporate identity: enumerating the ways in which tinseltown-then as well as now- demean and assimilate Italians, Jews, hispanics, blacks, and Asians. No luck!

Along comes the Arab issue....and wow....even BAFTA is launching a series of events.

Get it right, guys? Bollywood is Bollywood. The east Indians were never a significant force in the American film industry and forced to suffer the same abuses of Jews, Italians, hispanics, and others including the British (just think of all those Brits who have had to Americanise their diction and personality so as to fit in)

Neither were the Arabs. But that doesn`t stop some people.

Anyone out there? Hello! Hello!

In my perspective, people only see what they want to see.
Tinseltown has produced, as I'm sure you're well aware, stereotypes, since there were little more than orange groves...
Believe me, as an Australian, hearing Mel Gibson drawling, a la California, irks me. I liked the guy I saw, all those years ago, in Mad Max. Even Olivia Newton John doesn't sound right, somehow.
Thanks for posting your question, as it has given me a wider insight into who the 'little people' who aren't forgotten by the stars, are...

Take it easy.

What I would be interested to find a study of is how many films feature actors of different races who aren't chosen for their race. I'm not saying ignore their race but have actors and actresses who primary role in the film in question is NOT "Arab Friend No. 1" Check out The Siege. It has a very Arab central theme and take a close look at the FBI guy that is Arab. Now what I want to ask is could you place that character in another film? Too often Hollywood will portray that race only if their connection is important to the story. Put that character in a different film, whether another crime/terrorist thriller, or perhaps a Drama or Rom/Com. Have some scenes showing how it affects their day to day life but lets not make his skin colour the sole purpose for his inclusion in the film. Lets really start to break some boundaries.

Yes, what is the question?
The same actor in the Siege plays Jeebs in MIB....just FYI, as well as Monk...Are those roles dependent on being Arab?

Arabs in American cinema will never sell impressive box office receipts so nobody of any position of power in Hollywood gives a damn about how Middle-Easterners are depicted in THEIR films, much less any film.
