I'm trying to install a Lil'Mynx Rotating Strip/Dance Pole. Suggestions welcome.?

Hello. I am a professional dancer, who is at my wits end trying to install my new dance pole. The apartment I rent from has vaulted ceilings with metal layered between the sheet rock and the joists. For whatever reason, my joist finder is giving me inaccurate readings. At first I thought it might be the popcorn ceiling that was affecting the joist finder. I am still unsure if this is affecting it as well. I really don't want to blindly drill holes in my ceiling anymore and I can't seem to find anyone who installs any sort of dance equipment in the phone book.

Every time I drill into the ceiling I hit metal. The metal bits can drill past it, but instead of finding a joist like the finder suggests, there is empty space.

Are there any repair men or women out there who can help me sort this out?

Thank you
Evalynn

I think the problem is that your stud finder works on magnetics. It is looking for a nail or screw that is used to keep the sheetrock on the stud. The metal behind the vaulted ceiling is throwing it off.

Have you checked with the landlord to see if this is okay with him? If so, ask him for the name of his handyman.

Since you have already drilled holes in the ceiling you need to make this simple tool to try to locate a solid Joist, stud, rafter.

Use a wire coat hanger, cut the hook off the top, straighten the bends to form a straight. wire, bend form one end so the part you slip up through the ceiling is 1 foot long, make it to look kinda like this ____l. You may want to bend a little handle on it so it looks like a crank. Insert this through the ceiling till the long part is on the top side and the short part is pointing at the floor. Rotate this to find a stop point. This is where the little crank handle is important. When the top side hits a stud it will stop. Pay attention to the location of the handle. Remove tool from hole. By holding the tool up to the ceiling on the bottom side and lining the through shaft up with the hole and positioning the crank handle where it was when installed through the ceiling the end will of the long side will be pointing to where you need to be drilling. Be aware this is finding the edge not the center.
Good luck

PS A dancer would have no problem finding a handy man such as myself to do her installations for her if she would practice while I'm working. I could probably have this done in say 15 or 20 MONTHS ! ! !

Really Good Luck , and pardon the pun I just couldn't resist

I find it strange that there would be "metal" behind the drywall if the building is framed out of lumber. Perhaps you are encountering steel stud framing. When you are drilling into you ceiling, you are probably expecting to find a wooden joist or truss, but if the ceiling is framed of steel studs, then the very metal that is frustrating you is exactly what you want to be fastening to. If this is the case, attaching you pole to the structure will be a little more difficult and may require more extensive measures, such as adding stiffeners or blocking in the ceiling. Like other people have suggested, I would advise you to consult a renovation specialist for this one.

Call Lilmynx and ask them for a complete installation guide. Check to make sure that you have a Stud finder, that Differentiates between metal and Wood., You want to find the wood Stud., I have listed a website that sells the correct finder that you need., Or you could just go to my website and buy one of my poles, that requires NO BOLTS OR SCREWS FOR my private line of Dance Poles, at

http://www.stinkiepinkie.com/stripperpoles1.html

But since you already purchased yours and now have holes all in your ceilings, go to this site and compare it to the finder that you are using.

http://www.zircon.com/SellPages/ScanAndSensor/Fundamentals/Fundamentals6-Metal.html
Finding/Avoiding Metal
Multifunction wall scanners have a dedicated Metal Scan mode.
Metal Scan Mode can locate ferrous (magnetic) metals up to three inches (76 mm) deep, such as rebar, steel pipes, joist hangers or stud protector plates

It can locate non-ferrous metal (copper, aluminum, etc) up to 1-1/2" deep (38 mm) to find pipes and duct work.

Uses:

Differentiate between wood studs and metal studs
Find rebar in concrete
Find conduit
Find water and gas pipes
Locate nails and screws
Find ventilation ducts
Locate nails fastening wood lath to studs in lath and plaster construction (where metal mesh is not present)

Good Luck

K, so you found metal frames. Great, either if the metal is thick, use an engineering tap to cut a thread (like a nut) into the metal or use a hollow fixing.
For the engineering tap your local garage would help you out in exchange for free samples, for the hollow fixing, your local DIY store.

Just put an add in the local paper- Stripper seeks Handyman to install pole at her place. I'm sure you get a few bites and some free labor.
