The church is against artificial contraception because it destroys the basis of married love- complete and total self giving. It makes the marital act all about sex, rather than mutual love. It allows the spouses to use each other solely for their own pleasure with out allowing the other purpose of marriage- the life of children- to be a part.

Natural Family Planning is knowledge of a couple's fertility. It is so effective that INFERTILE couples have achieved pregnancy this way! Couples who use NFP prayerfully consider whether they are ready for a child. If they decide to postpone a pregnancy, they still realize that if they do become pregnant, the child is God's will for them and they accept that child as a gift from the Lord. When they engage in the marital act, they give themselves totally, freely and completely to each other AS THEY ARE AT THAT MOMENT. No one could ask for more.

By the way- many protestant churches are realizing the Catholic Church has been right all along and are teaching couples that artificial contraception is a denial of trust in the Lord's care ofr us.....hmmmm....Catholic church has been teaching that for YEARS!!!
