You can leave a computer on indefinitely without problem. It is true that this will increase your electricity bill, but a stable computer should be able to run 24/7. I've had many computers and I leave them all on to run distributed computing programs including BOINC and Prime 95. I have never had one of these computers fail on me.

It is also true that this leaves it vulnerable to a power surge, but there is no one who should have a computer plugged into a wall without a surge protector. The best ones protect from a surge, have a battery backup which will kick in during a power failure, and will automatically save your work shut down your computer when the power fails.

But, if you are not running distributed computing programs it's best to shut down the computer. You don't even have to do this physically. Go to your screensaver options, then power options, and tell the computer to stand by after 2 or 3 hours. Then it will wake up quickly when you need it, you consume less energy, and you put less theoretical stress on your components.

Google has evaluated a lot of hard drives. And the conclusion seems to be that the more you use the drives the less they tend to fail.

Most modern computers can be left on almost permanently. Many businesses do this, but it helps to re-boot occasionally so that your memory is restored
