I always wondered what the big deal was also. I think it is overrated.
As for it being a "classic", so what?
And for being too young, I am not young at all and totally agree with you.

What? WHAT?!?!?!? Nothing special? Are you CRAZY! How old are you? Too young? That is what the rest of these people answer, but how can you watch The Godfather and say that it is nothing special? Tha acting is superb, the directing is better than the acting and the book was better than all of that! It was PERFECT story telling about a very dramatic story. There are layers upon layers in this movie. Godfather 2 is even more complex. You sound like you just read the Bible and said that it is just a book about the desert. Try and see what is being said. Wait a few years, read the book and watch the movie again. Try watching movies like Goodfellas, and Casino. These will Whet your apetite for The Godfather. Just a little advice. Don't go around insulting the Godfather. It insults other people and makes you look dumb. It is credited with being the greatest movie ever made. That is like saying that Soccer is boring, while you live in Brazil.

First of all, every mob movie made today owes something to The Godfather, since it was the first Mafia movie. So it held a lot of facination at the time because people hadn't seen something like that.
But what makes it still a classic is how it mixes morality around so that you are made to feel empathy with a cold-blooded criminal because it makes you buy into his own code of ethics. He is a family man. He values loyalty and rewards it. He is a man of his word. He doesn't want to sell heroin because it will mess up kids. Yet he is a criminal and murderer. The movie creates an equivalence between this murderer and the politicians and police who are supposed to be the good guys.
It is a story that takes a value - honor - and raises it up so high that it becomes twisted into something evil, and then lifts it further until we can't even tell what is evil and what is good.
That is pretty powerful drama.

Imagine it's 1972 then tell us what you think. I read the book before I saw the movie and I was impressed by the movie. The cast is fantastic (Caan, Brando, Pacino, Duval, Keaton !?), the story fascinating. All they were missing was DeNiro and they fixed that with Part II - which, in my opinion was equal or greater than the first.
What's your example of a great movie?
It's almost like looking at the original Star Trek now versus in 1966 when it was new and not everyone had a color television.

consider that it shows part of why the American public had such a love affair with the real mob, its cold and calculating rise to prominence,it was shot in a time when the Mafia was still very much alive and active, it was shot in beautiful locations and caught many of Hollywood's big names in their youth at their rawest...young people could never appreciate this movie for what it is...too spoiled with unlikely cg and special effect movies...(by the way nice lob up there smith)

I have not seen it, and have no interest in seeing it. But I might, just to see what all the hype is about. I'll let you know what I think. If i make it past the first in the trilogy, then that may be saying something.

It is a classic movie, and for the time it was made it was killer. For today's standards it's a fair movie. Kinda like other classic movies like Harvey, It's a Wonderful Life, Holiday Inn, they are just great movies that have a timeless story line, and depict that time wonderfully.

You don't say how old you are. But, if you are young, I agree with what Jayson (above) says, maybe you are too young. Plus, if you are young, you have been brought up on a visual diet of Eddie Murphy in a fat suit, Tom Cruise exploding a continent, and Adam Sandler being an idiot again and again and again and again and again and again...So, perhaps you are not 'trained' to see films that make you think.
Watch it again when you are older.

I agree. I guess like most Italian based charachter movies, they all are made out to be so Mafia with a poor story line. All this movie is, is grown men with a boys imagination trying to be tough
