Top achievers typically have a high level of self-confidence. They know what they want out of life. They know how to use their strengths to reach their goals. They tend to take more risk, but they are not afraid of failure.Overall, there is something about the nature of the beliefs that peak performers have that build confidence and spurs motivation

Motivation is a means of creating or launching an action but without direction. Confidence is supported by knowledge, decipline and courage can provide a direction to motivation to hit target.

I guess this is like comparing an apple with an orange. Not an allowed comparison. Because they are two different unrelated parameters of human psycology. Motivation is provision of necessary external triggers to pursue a particular course of action. (Definitely this implied there is a direction). Confidence on the other hand is the self-perceived ability to carry out the action (with or without the external triggers). A good motivator can act as a confidence booster and while you are confident, you can be self-motivated too.

Confidence supported by knowledge is represented by images of past success and inspires feelings of motivation and desire. Confidence is the knowledge that "I've done it before, or something similar, I can do it again". Naturally feelings of motivation and desire will be aroused in a situation like this.
The only thing missing is a worthwhile goal, or objective.
Imagine sitting around thinking, "I'm stoked...but I don't know what to do with myself". You probably feel very motivated and somewhat confident that you can conquer the world but without a goal or plan what are the results? Nothing but a good feeling.

Motivation is the drive to do somethin,it is a codition that energizes behaviour and gives it direction. Its the inspiration from something or someone, while confidence is the faith in urself, ur capabilities and faith that u can and will do the thing u believe in.
motivation give inspiration and direction, confidence will help you carry it forward, that is for eg to fight for what u feel is right and that also involves courage.

Belief is a powerful predictor of success. Research consistently shows that those confident in their ability to make life changes are far more successful in those efforts than those who question their ability to change.
So long as a man imagines he cannot do something, so long as he is determined not to do it, then it is impossible for him to do it. Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right.
Set a greater number of goals.
Set more effective goals (in other words, base them on SCAMPI principles).
Set goals in more areas of life, thereby putting their emotional eggs in more baskets.
Achieve more and perform better in many domains, from academics to sports to social competence.
Are happier, and suffer less anxiety, depression and burnout.
Attribute failures to changeable causes (e.g., poor strategies) rather than unchangeable ones (e.g., not being smart enough).
React better to difficult circumstances, including bad test scores, stressful jobs, paralyzing accidents, and chronic illnesses.
Use more effective coping habits such as humor, regular exercise, and preventative care.
Are better at preventing a single lapse from snowballing into a full-blown relapse.

You dont have to be confident to be motivated. And you dont have to be motivated to be confident. Confidence is when you go up and do something. Motivation is when you have the motivation to try something.
Alot of people are motivated but they dont have the confidence so they dont do what they are motivated to.
I hope i helped:)

It is preferable to have both.
Motivation: You might not be sure that you can succeed, but you have strong desire to act.
Confidence: You might not desire to act, but you are sure that you can succeed if you did.
But if I had to choose one, I think it is more important to have confidence. It seems psychologically healthier.

Confidence is knowing you can do a thing when you can actually do it. Motivation is s atype of confidence you need when the thing could or could not be done by you. And please no rhetorics please.
