If a couple has sex around the time that the woman produces an egg (ovulation), the male reproductive cells, or sperm, can reach the female egg and fertilise it about 5-10 minutes after the man ejaculates.

If it is not quite ovulation time, but getting close to it, the sperm can travel up into the vagina and live in the small glands near the entrance of the uterus or in the Fallopian tubes for to 5-6 days. The egg itself lives for less than 24 hours after it is ovulated so sperm have to fertilise it during this time for a pregnancy to occur.

After it is fertilised the egg takes abbut 5-7 days to travel down the woman's Fallopian tube to the uterus and embed itself in the lining to start a pregnancy.

The first sign that most women get that they could be pregnant is that their period doesn't come at the expected time or is much lighter than usual. It's best to wait a couple of days to a week after a period is due to do a pregnancy test, because by then there is enough pregnancy hormone in the urine for the test to be reliable.

You can buy a pregnancy test that you do yourself at home from a supermarket or chemist, or you can see your doctor who will do the test on the spot, or sometimes send off a blood test if there is any doubt about the result. Some, but not all, women will get other symptoms which let them know they are pregnant - symptoms such as tiredness, nausea, breast tenderness or passing urine more often. These symptoms usually start about a week after the period is missed.

While many women find they get some mild lower abdominal discomfort during early prenancy as the uterus grows and stretches the surrounding support structures, more severe pain could be the first sign of an ectopic pregnancy (where the pregnancy grows outside the uterus), a possible early miscarriage, an ovarian cyst or even an infection. So any pain a woman experiences when pregnant, whether this happens during sex or not, should really be discussed with her doctor so that early treatment can be arranged if needed.

having sex everyday gives you a better chance of conceiving but even if you have sex every other day is just as good. sperm live inside the female for a few days so if you have sex 3 times a week you are actually giving those buggers time to grow strong before the next cuddle night.
