I would personally buy an Acer if I had a choice between the two. My reason for that is I've heard some negative things about Gateway's customer service. I've had an Acer laptop for work in the past and it seemed pretty good value for money. I've never had a Gateway computer before but would be wary after hearing negative comments about their customer service.
If I was you I would visit sites like http://www.ebuyer.com/ and http://www.amazon.co.uk/ and look for customer reviews of products by the two brands - that tends to be a good indicator. Also http://www.ciao.co.uk/ and http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/ both have customer reviews on.

Acer is a lower end computer maker, from what I understand - the sort of thing you'd find in offices. If that's what you want, go for it. Gateway does that too, but also markets to a bit higher end machines. All my experience with them has been great - I had two Gateway laptops in the past, from about 9 and 6 years ago, and they both -still- run (the 9 yr old one not so well of course, but I still use the newer one often). I recently returned to Gateway for a desktop, after having an awful experience with a luxury-brand computer, and found that too has been great - I'm on it right now, and their service was amazing - I stupidly put the wrong address in the billing address, and they wrote back to me within a couple of hours every time I emailed them - even in the middle of the night.

If you go and take a look on some review sites, that will give a better idea. Try Ciao or Dooyoo.
Im looking at getting an Acer laptop for my son later in the year as I've heard loads of good about them , I haven't looked at gateway though.

Gateway is the discern organisation of Acer. each and each gadget could be in comparison spec-for-spec. seek for swifter processors, greater and swifter ram, and not undemanding force area. HP produces some great desktops yet particular fashions have extensive-unfold themes, as any organisation could have. Have a buddy or depended on source inform you which ones fashions are suited on your laptop utilization.

Gateways are usually good machines. Ive had one for over 4 years with no probs. Also there desktops seem to hold to gether and look better after the years. I think they tend to use higher end hardware. (excluding Emachines)
