Have you read Janet Evanoviches' Stephanie Plum Books?? They are numered: One For The Money, Two for the Dough, Three to get Deadly...you get the idea! She is all the way up to 12! Here is why I recommend them:
They are funny. Surgery and bed for a month--you need some humor girlfriend--and cheering up! There is romance and hot guys...they are a fast, interesting read--I didn't want to put them down and was sorry when I was finished with each one. Plus Stephanie's a bounty hunter , blundering and tripping after the bad guys.
Good luck and be well!

Jodi Picoult is the author for you.
She incorporates all of these genres into all of her novels.
Her best book is "My Sister's Keeper", about a daughter born into a family to donate blood to her sister, a rare blood type, and is used as a "supply system" for her sister whenever she is in need of transplants...so when they are teenagers and her older sister needs a kidney, she refuses and takes the family to court..
Other honourable mentions of Jodi Picoult are:
- "Vanishing Acts"
- "Keeping Faith"
- "Picture Perfect"
