I think it depends on the rules of the school district and what their supply of subs happens to be. I think most school districts prefer someone with a B.A., but when I was a kid, I know I had substitutes that did not have a degree. I lived in a small community 100 miles from any large town. The area had trouble attracting teachers and had a poor supply of trained subs. When I was in the 8th grade there was a flu epidemic, and all the subs were already working. For two days a friend and I were unpaid teachers (i.e. babysitters) for the kindergarten class because there was no one else. They couldn't send the kids home--some would have gone home to an empty, locked house. If the high school had been located in my hometown, they probably would have gotten kids from the high school. Instead, they asked me because my mom was a teacher, and asked my friend because her mom was on the school board. (Both of us were smart enough to get caught up after we returned to class, and yes, we had to do all the assignments as homework.)
