Romance novels are a genre of popular escapist literature. They are written for women according to a formula, which is incredibly sensitive handsome sexy boy meets girl, there are impossible hurdles to their relationship/they have dangerous adventures/liasons...; they either overcome them and live happily ever after or come to a tragic end. Very romantic fantasy. People who read a lot of them can have a very distorted idea of what love is, which would certainly affect popular culture. The "love" depicted in these books is really lust- it lacks depth. You can see this in other forms of romantic entertainment- movies, for instance. What is said to be love is rarely the real thing. It may be attraction, but not the deep love of another person that lasts. It give people the notion that they will be happy ever after without working at it, and as soon as they find out their partner isn't perfect, are too quick to quit.
