At first the U.S. gave loans and resources to the UK and China. In less importance to the soviet union (they had the siberian gold and very advanced weapons like the T-34, the PPSh-41, the Il-2 and others). After pearl harbor the US had their main battle against japan in massive naval battles like midway (turn point in the pacific war) and great landing operations like iwo jima. the main role in the war was the war against Japan. In europe the US took part in the war against the german army after the british victory in the alamein and against the luftwaffe after the RAF victory. the first action against the german was a defeat against Rommel in the pass of kasserine. the battle in italy made by british and US forces was a slow war but was useful to weak germany. The RAF and USAF bombers weak germany too destroying their infrastructure. But the main losses of the german army were in the eastern front in the battles of moskow (first german defeat), Stalingrad (greatest battle in the world history and worst german defeat) and Kursk (greatest tank battle). When the US and british landed in normandy (2 beaches were for the US and 3 for the british forces) the US and the british could take france and western europe. The same day the Soviets launch a great attack against the germans in poland even bigger than the operation overlord. In europe the main role of the US was secure western europe from the nazis and the soviets. If the US werent in the war or germany would held france, italy, belgium, norway and neatherland or the red army would advance until portugal (Remeber they took berlin) the british empire could stop germany in the channel and in africa but they werent ready to take europe by themselfs and neither to contain the USSR. Other posibility is a deal between stalin and hitler. In the pacific the US keep alive china and they destroy the japanese imperial navy and freed the pacific islands, took iwo jima and okinawa (two japanese islands), US bombed japan and droped the atomics bombs. The US was the only stong allied force in asia until the massive attack of the Russian forces against the japanese in China after the atomic bombs. The US was the country that defeated Japan as Soviet Union defeated germany

I would like to add once America was in the war it was in it completely. The main thing that saved Europe was the fact that America geared up and produced unparalleled amount of planes, ships, and other supplies. We also sent people to fight, as in so many men went that women for the first time were welcomed into factories to help support this great product of needed equipment. The whole country was into this even Hollywood, rationing was in place so that raw materials could go to the supplying of the troops.
And don't forget the Pacific. Even though the Japanese basically wiped out the Pacific fleet (the Atlantic fleet still existed, but was needed for the Europe part of the war). America rebuilt that fleet and more and was able to take on the the Japanese fleet. Basically the Pacific war was almost entirely America against Japan.
BTW it was the atom bomb that ended the war with Japan, but not before the America had taken almost every island right up to Japan and pretty much wiped out the whole Japanese fleet, very closely in lives on both sides.

The simple answer to this would simply save pearl harbour, dec. 7th 1941, and leave it at that. However, the truth is little more complicated than that. In the beginning, the war did begin and revolve around Europe; the war in the Asian theater was a different matter all together. Through our desire to help the English and her allies stave off the Nazi advance, we became more and more linked to the situation over there. At the same time, in Asia, we wee trying to check the expansion of the Japanese through not only diplomatic means but through slowing trying to starve the war machine of raw materials (oil steel aluminum etc...) That helped them to decide to attack us. Germany declared war on us a few days later hence putting us in the middle.

America was on the allies force. The allies force was opposed to the axis force. The axis force was Japan, Germany and Italy. America's role was great since it provided large amounts of resources to the allied countries (france, britain, russia). America was not part of the WWI at first, but when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour, America entered the war and this move was possibly the downfall of the axis forces since before that, the country was neutral. Many countries were in debt to america and thus, when wall street crashed, many countries went down with america and america fed off these countries whom owed it money. This was one of the main reasons why america is one of the most influential countries nowadays and why it has a higher economy and miliatary than the european countries.

Please, are you that lazy?
There is so much info available on the Internet on this subject, it borders on being criminal to try to answer your question. I rarely blast people, but come on have you even looked? I typed "World War II" and got nearly 100 million hits! Start with Wikipedia and go from there.
