I have a 1990 Honda Accord. The alternator was just replaced on it for the second time (the first one replaced two months before was fautly.) The Mechanic said that when he did the second replacement my battery was good. However, if it sits more than a few hours it won't start. It will start fine when it's jumped, but not on it's own. if it sits nine hours or more (i sometimes have long shifts at work) the battery is just about completely dead.

What could be causing this?

the only way to verify would be to disconnect the battery after you have teh car running. If it stays running then it is the battery not the alternator. I would reccomend running it by another mechanic or shop to get checked. Also check for anything extra running or draining the battery that is plugged into an external 12v source

It is a good chance that you probably have a problem with the alternator still, you can go to pep boys, autozone or any of this type pf places and they can run a diagnose to find out the real cause, sometimes it could even be a short circuit. Sometimes is recommendable that once you had problems with the alternator also to replace the battery.

Good Luck!.

lets see its a 1990 and a battery last 4-5 years if your lucky. if the battery isnt taking a full charge the alternater is overworking and probably burning itself out.take the car to a good part store and have a charging test done its free at most places

There might be something left on that's draining your battery that you might not be noticing, it's possible to get 2 bad alternators in a row, I went back and forth 3 times after replacing the alternator each time, go to an auto parts store, and ask them to test your alternator (they'll hook it up to a machine and you just turn on your car)(it's free.) that'll answer your question.
