The kidney regulates fluid and electrolyte balance by filtration, secretion and reabsorption
The kidney is an endocrine organ – it activates both erythropoeitin (for production of red blood cells) and vitamin-D (which regulates calcium metabolism). It also produces renin (in the afferent arteriole) which affects various aspects of water and electrolyte homeostasis

Also involved in osmoregulation. The kidney reabsorbs water lost during urine formation according to the osmalarity (amount of water) present in blood. If there is not enough water the kidney rebsorbs more water and vice versa. Process is controlled by ADH hormone.
