MRTS : An Eco-Friendly Project

The proposed Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), the first phase of which is slated for completion by 2005 is going to be one of the most eco-friendly projects in Delhi. With International Consultants being associated with the project the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation which is building the MRTS aims at using the latest technical know how available in Metro Systems worldwide.

MRTS will result in time saving for commuters, reliable and safer journeys, reduction in atmospheric pollution, reduction in accident rates, reduced fuel consumption, reduced vehicle operating costs and increase in the average speed of road vehicles. This would result in the improvement in the quality of life making Delhi a much more attractive city for economic investment and growth.

In the survey and construction stage all efforts are being made by the Corporation to save trees. Through proper care 30% of trees in the alignment have been saved and the Corporation is taking full care to ensure adequate compensatory forestry in consultation with the forest department of Delhi for all trees and shrubs affected by the construction.

A detailed Environmental Impact Assessment has been done in 1994 to minimize the negative environmental impact of the Project during the construction stage of the Project. Storm water drains have been identified at various sites for drainage of wastewater from construction and sites have been earmarked at convenient locations for temporary and permanent disposal of soil arising out of tunneling and other construction works. A close check will be kept on air and noise pollution during construction and adequate rehabilitation and fire protection measures will be taken to ensure minimum inconvenience to the public.

The corporation has been coordinating with various bodies to control traffic, water supply, and electricity, Telephone lines etc. that will be affected during construction.

The above efforts of the corporation are aimed at providing an efficient and fast transportation system to the people of Delhi with minimum inconvenience.

For every tree cut during construction the DMRC is planting 10 trees as compensatory afforestation . Around 26000 trees have been planted at Najafgard, Isapur and Rebla Khanpur.
