You did something to get you fired because you were fed up - this was a deliberate act that got you the result you wanted.
And now you want to get back into IT? IT is a very large field, and one of the biggest changes that's happened over the last 6 years is in the way its arranged. When I started in IT 20 years ago, one person could do everything, and this is so not the case now. What I suggest you do is set aside some time to figure out how the industry has changed - forewarned is forearmed. There are now many subscription mags available on the web - not a bad starting place.
I'll give you a starter for 10 - were you in helpdesk, support, business analysis, programming, architecture, project management? Use wikipedia, figure out what the industry looks like now.
Where do you want to be in it?
What have you done over the last six years that compliments this ambition?
The one thing that IT is really crying out for is well rounded business talent, because finding someone who understands business as well as IT isn't easy. And this is the main challange you will face if you want to make it big.
The fact that you've got an IT background and have been doing something else for 6 years can really work in your favour, once you've packaged your new experience in a way that a prospective employer can understand. Sell your new experience as business experience - get creative if you have to.
Interviews are a fantastic place to learn how the industry has changed, and I find most people are quite willing to talk about themselves, even if it's you who are the candidate! In a couple of hours, you can really get up to speed on how things have changed, and even if you don't get the job first time, it will set you up to get the next one, or the next one. Every interview you do will give you the experince of the language changes and structure changes you need to become comfortable enough to succeed.
So go get 'em, and don't take no for an answer!

OK you stuffed up badly we all do in some way but life goes on.
Like, fall of a horse get back on All you need is a fair go and don't do it again. Some where out there is a person who will give you a go however it will never happen if you don't allow it,sounds like you have been punished long enough so be a bit fair to yourself as well OK? You do deserve another chance and make the most of it in a good way this time.Good luck go get that job and believe it will happen eventually be strong and deserving of this and it will happen

If you want to reenter IT related work, I think you can enter this field with ease. Make yourself free that you will not be able to do it (negative thoughts always make the person fail). You can read some latest books on IT or your own study books (for revision) or grasp the magazines of the subject, rebuild your confidence and I can see you succeeding in the field.
Good luck and God bless.

Dude.... just do it. Everything happens for a reason. Maybe you had to leave and look at your life from a different prospective to see that you had found what was good for YOU. If you wanna go back, then go back. It's that easy. Make that your state of mind. And make a killing!!! Best fo luck :)

you suffered enough. don't think about it. i mean you've got 6 solid years of another experience so why worry. all you need is strength to face every challenge. show them that you can still cope with a lot of changes and willing to learn and adjust. good luck.
