It gets old if the same person does it over and over. If you just accept it and say thank you, you might find you CAN get over yourself and start believing in some of the compliments, too.

I'm horrible at accepting compliments too. I never believe them. However, people find it very annoying when others won't accept their compliments. Firstly, it can be seen as false modesty. Secondly, it's actually bad manners.
The best way to accept a compliment if you don't like it is to simply say "Thank you" and then move on with the conversation. If you don't like it because of the attention, you can change the subject. If you don't like it because you don't know what to say, well, I just told you!
"Thank you" is the easiest, most acceptable way to deal with it. Don't feel like you need to respond with a compliment to the person who gave you one. It's not necessary and can appear fake, like you only complimented them because they complimented you.

It doesn't really bother me when someone doesn't accept complements well, but it does show a lack in self confidence sometimes. I don't think you have to necessarily accept complements, but by responding negatively you may be sending out the wrong vibe/sign/message of what you are actually thinking...

its not that i get hurt if som1 doesnt accept my compliment, coz i pass out compliment to people only if they really deserve that compliment.. and if they are least bothered about my compliment.. it doesnt bother me at all .. i think that i have done my job.. and m sure that even if the person is showing that they cant accept the compliment.. the inner part of them must be blushing listing that positive compliment..

Many people will do that so as not to seem self centered. I don't take it as an insult.
Though, it sounds like you don't like the way you react. Try a simple, 'Thanks, but I am not really...'.
