That is a common belief in religions where anything that happens has been predetermined... commonly used in Islam that Allah has already decided the outcome of events even before they happen.

The American or Chrisitan equivalent is ... by God.

Predestinationalism is primitive belief that there is a fix future for all people. There is no American equivalent because people in the US believe that their future lies in the choices they made.
