what does he want? What motivates him?

He wants the students to do better for themselves than being a thug or a slut. The kids motivate him and the thought of other teachers and the principle believing that he can not do anything to help them. He wants to prove them all wrong.

Sounds like a school question. Did you watch the movie? You should, it's really powerful and a well-made movie.

He's motivated by a true desire to help these inner-city students do something extraordinary in their lives--he feels that if he can just help them see that they can do this for themselves, that maybe they can overcome their decidedly modest beginnings and escape the cycle of poverty they were born into.

His job in computer IT may have paid more, but it was unfulfilling. He is motivated by this desire to do good--you can see this because when he falters is when he believes that he cannot accomplish this with these students.

He wants to help these people overcome issues of race and discrimination, to prove to them and to others that they're smart and capable, and to give them a chance. There's the scene toward then end when they're accused of cheating and he gets angry and accuses the AP board of discrimination. This shows that it's a very sensitive subject for him, and I can imagine that as a Latino man he had to face it himself.

He wants you to watch that movie. Cause the answer is obvious. I will also bet you that someone will give you the synopsis of the wrong movie and tell you about Crazy Joe in Lean on Me.

he wants to show those inner city kids that they CAN learn. He wants to prove that they are smart. Also it is unique but he is a real teacher. Teachers actually do care what happens to their students, if they learn or not. It is how they are made.
