I think you have asked this question from safety point of view and not on pollution point of view.. Tourist generally take bath since it is India's most sacred river. If careful enough it is safe to take bath in Ganga. In summer the water level will be very low and it is safe. In monsoon months it will be overflowing and you should be careful and take bath only at the knee deep water at the banks or you can go down 2 or 3 steps only where ever the steps are available.

I have taken bath a few times in Hardwar (the place where ganges enters the plains). Not much pollution at that stage -- have enjoyed taking a dip during the summers there very much!

going further downstream, I guess it becomes polluted.

Its safe in most of the places.
I have taken bath many times in Kolkata and nothing has happened. Only one should be careful about the under current. The under current is very strong and if any one falls in it - may be fatal.

No, The waters of the Ganga are the most polluted and you can catch skin disease by bathing in the dirty contaminated waters.
I would suggest that you have the water examined for contamination and you will see that I am right !

Exactly where you want to bath?
At Haridwar Ganga is very clean. But as it traverses to downstream reaches pollution along banks make it unhygienic to bath

its just a dip u are talking about i presume. do not swallow the water nor should u try to venture into depths & u should be fine. after the dip if u are very particular u can always have a proper good bath & rinse yourself out well.

Ganges starts at ' Gomukh ' about 18km. from Gongotri
and then it reaches the ocean at Bay of Bengal. Bathing
at many places upstream, is ok. further down, is not.
