I would lean towards "yes". Laptops are subject to shocks, drops and impact that most desktops or even DVD players never have to deal with. As wide a surface area that a disk has, even if it's locked to a spindle with a ball-bearing set, you better believe that with every bump perpendicular to the disk, the disk surface is touching a part of the DVD Drive, particularly when the drive is optimized for space rather than protecting the media.

Check the disk in a tabletop DVD Player. If it still works, the drive too may be suspect.
