I have NOT, - I confess, - actually, SEEN one, from a CIVIL aircraft, but, - unless they are different, from MILITARY aeroplanes, - the piece of kit, known, as the "BLACK BOX", is, actually, BRIGHT ORANGE, in colour!

actually it is orange.. i've never seen one but a friend of mine, a pilot told me that the black box is orange for the same reason you said.. to be easily spotted in water.
