Take him to his physician ASAP. Even if there is no illness, there be some treatment available. It could be a emotional problem. This has to be concerning for your son too.

Hopefully he is washing his hair often and scrubbing and massaging the scalp to get everything really clean. It could be heredity. My dad was bald by 21. I was on the same road until I was told to wash my hair every day to get the oil out and I also massage the scalp to get the oxygen and blood circulating. I still have all my hair from this technique.

This is my opinion only but I think kids wear hats all the time and this allows lots of dirt and bacteria to settle into the hair follicles which causes hair problems. Dump or clean any hats.

Both of my boy started to lose hair near the end of high school.

Speak to your doctor about this to make sure there isn't any thing more going on.

Make sure he is eating healthy. Plenty of protien.

one of my friends has the same thing. im pretty sure he went to a doctor for it and they said it is hereditary... which makes sense because his brother is doing it too. from what i understand, his head needs oxygen to help... ie no hats or anything... sorry, that is all i know, but i hope it helped
