In the beginning of the story, Scout as an adult narrating the rememberance of her childhood, says something about how recently they had been told they had nothing to fear but fear itself. This was a quote from FDR's inaugural speech of 1933.
Atticus also tells Scout that they are poor but the farmers (including the Cunningham's who fought with Scout, and whose father brought Atticus the hickory nuts for legal work) are worse off because "the crash hit them the hardest". This of course is the stock market crash of 1929, indicating that the story is set during the Great Depression.

I believe the movie was made in 1961, but go to your search engine -- you will find it there. I hope you are reading the book, reading is fundimental !!! And I hope this generation realizes that there is much more reward in books than in movies. I love movies, but I always read the book too, usually 1st !!!

after slaves, before the civil rights movement. So like the 1920's I'm thinking. But before the great depression because they don't seem that greatly depressed.
